The Midori Molecule

What’s green, sweet, and makes a lot of cocktail geeks sick? One of my favorite Liqueurs!

Okay so Midori may not be the most refined substance in the world. It’s mostly reviled by high-class Mixologist’s for its rampant sweetness and what I suspect is a product that contains dye. However I can’t prove that.

So what Can I prove? Midori is made by the Suntory company, a Distillery group that makes fantastic whisky that I would hold against the finest in the world.  Midori was launched in 1978 in Studio 54 at the height of the disco era which is famed for producing terrible drinks. It’s said to be made from Yubari melons famed for tough growing conditions and high quality.

I can tell you that Midori is sweet but I don’t feel that it’s syrupy even though it will stick to things and make you need pliers to open the bottle should it spill and dry. I can also tell you it makes things green the way Blue Curacao makes things blue.

Even though the tone isn’t flattering, I really like Midori. It’s great for achieving a bright green color and it has a nice sweet melon flavor. It’s in our Halloween drink from our Absinthe post the “Ectoplasm.” We also Featured it in a St. Patrick’s day cocktail the “Bangkok Patty”.

For those of you out to try this tasty liqueur, like a certain Facebook commenter, It’s good in lemonade, or in place of the simple syrup in a margarita. Try it in just about anything you’d like to sweeten.

However for my money I enjoy Midori most in a light cocktail my best friend Dan made for me after a long night of drinking. I was feeling a little queasy but we weren’t ready to stop partying. So he mixed this up and it really soothed the stomach. I later recreated and measured it out.
