Toddy Troubles: Hot Buttered Rum

Ah hot buttered rum one of my very favorite cold weather drinks and evidence that hot water can be a nice ingredient.

There are dozens of ways to make a buttered toddy, but the best in my opinion is to make a compound butter with the spices and butter. If one adds the spices in with the rum they don’t dissolve. They sit and get powdery and become annoying to drink.

I didn’t ever really try the hot water version, after all how is hot water going to benefit the flavor? To answer it’s by letting the rum and batter do the talking.

My version uses Chai and no additional spices beyond the garnish. The regular butter adds a creaminess and the honey provides its unique flavor and sweetness.

No matter how you make it remember a good quality rum is key. As we discussed before a hot drink will magnify the flaws in a lesser rum. We enjoyed premium Trinidadian sipper Zaya in this immensely.

Try it both ways I think the hot water will leave you surprised.
