MxMo Humbug: Crimson Krampus

Like I said last week my buddy dan is always helping me make drinks. So when he was in town I opened up my bar to him to create a drink based on this month’s MxMo Theme: Humbug. Hosted by yours truly. As he’s always been a great help to my own drink making it’s only write he share the site this month. After all it’s a season of giving and shit right? Here’s what he had to say in regards to the drink.

In the spirit of the Anti-Holidays, I like to bring out the lesser known foil to ol’ St. Nick’s kindness his Germanic brother Krampus, a furry monstrous beast man who steals bad little children, beats them, puts them in a sack and then throws the sack in a river. He’s mean, he’s inhuman, and he’s unconventional but he gives the bratty little bastards what they have coming, a swift kick in the ass…. usually metaphorically. In the spirit of that I sought to capture the meanness with a nice bitter flavor, but his relation to Claus can’t be forgotten so a little sweetness and holiday spice are in order as well, and of course as the younger brother and because of the “gifts” he brings to the children who earn them some nice sour flavor to even everything out. So if you can wrangle the ingredients I say mix your self up a nice Crimson Krampus and don’t be afraid to bring a little holiday mischief to those who deserve it.

Ready to mix one? So am I, so lets go!

Crimson Krampus
Ingredients
2 oz Gin (Preferably Bristow from Cathead Distillery)
3/4 oz Aperol
1/2 oz Absinthe
1/4 oz Allspice dram
1/4 oz fresh lemon juice
1/4 oz cinnamon syrup
1/4 oz lakewood pure cranberry juice

Shake together with ice and strain over a large Ice cube garnishing with a lemon twist.

When you delve in to this chain rattling rampage Orange Peel, Allspice, Juniper, Fennel, and lemon peel all rush to the nose in a joyous cacophony of souls. As it warms it’s alot like a sauvignon blanc very grassy. The flavor is very well married with almost a raw coconutty flavor with balanced sour and anise notes. There are big citrusy notes with bits of spice and lemon. This drink is all over the place and I love it. The bitter and sour notes are there with a pleasent sweet backing. The color also really puts one in the mood for Christmas, if you like that sort of thing. It also raises the question as one quaffs, were you really good this year?

We’ll have our own MxMo submission for you Sunday, if you wanna play there’s still time. Just check our announcement post here, and until next time…
