The Painkiller shares a lot of similarities with the Pina Colada and yet at the same time it’s completely different. Perhaps this is because unlike the Pina Colada the Painkiller flew under the mainstream radar and dwelled more in the huts of Tiki fans. They are both sweet drinks, in fact the Painkiller is a bit sweeter even than a Pina Colada made our way. Yet the Painkiller is received much more warmly by just about anyone who calls themselves a cocktail fan.
The combination of dark rum, orange, and coconut are indeed enticing. But looking at this recipe what really blows you away is the four friggan ounces of pineapple juice. Seeing as when we juice one pineapple we get twelve ounces on a good day this really puts a hurting on our prep. I will say I think the sacrifice is worth it. However if you were to use cans of unsweetened pineapple I would not balk at the notion.
Sadly in recent history the Painkiller is more famous for the bullish way Pusser’s defends their patent. We’re not sure we really like the idea of patenting a drink recipe, but we’ll leave that to judges and what not. We realize Pusser’s is obligated to defend their patent lest they lose it, and rum is not the easiest market to be in when your trying to bottle quality and not flavored suntan oil. We also really like Pusser’s rum, it has a good character and price point. However I must point out it does share similarities with dark Jamaican rums like Myers in some respects. However we are legally obligated to tell you that anything made without Pusser’s Rum is not a Painkiller. Pusser’s is, legally, the official pour of the Painkiller. Even if the bar that invented it didn’t use that in the drink when they first created it. I know this seems negative, but I sincerely do recommend trying Pusser’s rum. It is quality.

4 oz fresh pineapple juice
1 oz fresh orange juice
1 oz Coco Lopez coconut cream
2 ½ oz Pusser’s navy rum
Shake juices, Lopez, and rum together with crushed ice. Pour unstrained into a tall glass or a Tiki glass and garnish with a cinnamon stick, orange wheel, and pineapple stick, then dust with spice.
The dusting of spices obviously dominate the aroma but they are quite pleasing along with wafts of pineapple. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and pineapple fill the mouth upon first sip and yield subtly to creamy coconut and softly sour orange. Rum brings up the rear with a subtle finish. This is definitely a night cap, a perfect dessert replacement. It may not be super bitter, strong, or sour, but it is a fun drink.
If you enjoy a heavy pour like we do we encourage you to try a Painkiller #4. All you need to turn this drink into a #4 is to add four ounces of rum instead of two and a half. We prefer to serve this to guests in a Tiki glass. For the purposes of the website we wanted you to be able to see the drink and thus we chose a chimney today. So what do you think of the Painkiller?
