Mixing with Mystics

Usually I, JFL, am the mastermind behind the drinks you see presented here. I come up with an idea and try it different ways letting my house full of tasters sample them until I think they are perfect. It gets nerve wracking because ,as a perfectionist, I’m hard to please. Plus since it’s free booze they are easy to please. One taster I can always count on is my brother from another mother Dan. In addition to being a bad-ass metal singer and a dedicated line cook he’s also brought us two of my favorite cocktails on the site. He’s also the one helping me bring you all content each and every week whether it’s tasting concoctions or holding up backdrops. For all this work he, like me, makes nothing in cash. However without him Rated R Cocktails just wouldn’t be much fun. After all we’ve been making drinks together since I turned twenty one. But enough sappy bromantic set up, I’ll let him tell you about this week’s drink in his own words.

Ok well we’re getting a little geeky with this cocktail, one night when we were down in the lab I was struck with the idea to create a potion in the same manner as fiction novel resident Harry Dresden. Knowing that I knew I’d need eight ingredients: a base liquid to begin with, one each for sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste, one more for the mind, and a final one for the heart. Working from that I chose some of the most exotic (and some of my favorite) ingredients. I mixed them together not knowing what to expect, but what came forth from the shaker was something truly magical. When the potion hits your palate it is instantly awash in flavor, which as soon as you think you get a feel for it the flavor changes to something else, and it does it again, and again, and again, until you lose all concept of where it began and you are wrapped up in the mystery. But can you find the answer to the question that lies coiled inside this potent libation?

 

I may not know much about the Dresden book series. I’m more of a classic movie and cartoon guy. But I know a good drink when I taste one. I didn’t need to do much tweaking with this drink save for switching out some rums and coming up with a garnish. I hasten you to use Creme de Yvette in this cocktail. Though very sweet is is layered, rich, and diverse in flavor. Creme de Violette on the other hand is far more one note and purple tasting. With that out of the way lets not tarry, find the drink below.

The Mystic Potion

¾ oz El Dorado 12

¾ oz Lemon Hart 151 or Cruzan 151

1 ½ oz Cruzan Blackstrap

¾ oz Fresh Lime Juice

¾ oz Coffee Syrup

1/3 oz Cherry Heering

½ oz Creme de Yvette

3 dashes Angostura bitters

Shake with plenty of ice and pour unstrained into a tulip glass. Make the garnish by spearing a cherry with a double pointed toothpick and inserting each end into a lime wedge. Then carefully slip this on the rim of the glass.

The nose is rich in apricot, violet, coffee and brown sugar aromas. The flavor is one of a kind with so many twists and turns in a luscious long finish. This is quite the rich full bodied drink that really does twist and change every time you think you have nailed down the flavor. The opening is lusciously filled with notes of sweet cherry, coffee bitterness, spice and Demerera burn, it folds into notes of violet and orange peel with a somewhat sweet and sour finish. However these are only minor points, this drink is something to experience yourself.

 

It’s okay to substitute Cruzan 151 here if you don’t have the Lemon Hart 151. In fact even if you have it I recommend trying it both ways. The Cruzan gives it a certain twang that makes you wiggle your hips. As silly as that may sound thats the only way I can describe it. Even though I ended up liking the Lemon Hart version better the Cruzan is no less fun.

    Oh no, not Cherry Herring. I have put a lot of crazy things in cocktails, but a fish?!?!?

    Big flavors, especially the molasses of the Blackstrap, but a bold collection to make the drink complex and delicious. Smartly written, and way to go with decorating your images.
